A line of redundant W1 loco's are awaiting their final fate but another use seems to have found for them for a while. Class W2, 711 amongst other hydraulic class mates seem to have reached the end of their working lifes. Class W1, 635 is being re-claimed by mother nature at Ratmalana. Henschel W1, 649 will never enjoy another run along the wonderful coastal route as it slips further in to decay at Ratmalana. Can you guess what it is yet ? W1 or W2... Your guess is as good as mine. Henschel class W1, 646 also awaits it's fate. Hitachi class M5, No. 773 has been taken out of service and the empty shell shows collision damage at both ends. Alstom built M9, No. 867 is one of many of these almost new locomotives side lined at ratmalana due to the un-reliability of the class. Just 3 or 4 of these remain in service. A driving trailer car of an S7 power set was found in the over grown siddings at Ratmalana. Hunslet shunter Y693, Built in 1969 in Leeds, England. This is the only one of the class that I have seen in this colour scheme as all the others are painted black. This engine was a total suprise. It is a G2 loco, No. 536. I know of only one other of these old North British, 1951 built shunters that still survives and that is No. 535 which can be found at Kandy. A total of eight locos were once in service on the Sri Lankan railway network. Looking in fine shape after a heavy overhaul is DLW Varanasi built M8, 843. Canadian MLW built M4,754 is under going a major overhaul at Ratmalana workshops. British built in 1981 by Brush locomotives is M7, 802. This loco is being almost completly re-built and will soon be thrashing again. Catch of the day !!! This little beauty is a G1 class shunting locomotive number 500. It was built in 1934 by the Armstrong Whitworth Co. at Newcastle up-on Tyne, England in 1934. It is currently waiting a repair due to a traction motor fault. The builders plate of the Whitworth Armstrong G1, No. 500 at Ratmalana. Another view of G1, 500 at Ratmalana. Two loco's that are ready to be put back into service are M7, 809 & M6, 788. A very rare view inside one of the main workshops at Ratmalana with M4, M5 & M8 loco's visable. W2, 706 with one of it's fellow hydraulic W1 relations lies amongst the vegitation at Ratmalana. Another total suprise find for me was this very rare N3 locomotive No. 001. This is a class that was totally un-known to me and I do not know of any other members of the same class. A look inside another workshop revealed many power sets and Y class shunting locomotives under repair. Almost totally covered by vegetation this loco is hardly recognisable. I suspect that it could be one of the 1972 locally built Y1 shunting engines that were short lived due to their un-reliability. No running number could be seen on it at all. Do you think we can fix it ? W1 class, 665 has seen better days for sure... A very rare view from one of the security towers in the jungle of Ratmalana with many withdrawn loco's to be seen. A very sad end for a fine locomotive. This is one of only two surviving Brush Bagnall M1 loco's from the original fleet of 25. Built in 1955, this is No. 556. It is not visable at all from ground level due to the jungle that is taking over the yard. An un-identifiable W2 class locomotive at Ratmalana. A really nice model which can be found in front of the main offices at Ratmalana of the Demodera station in the hill country with it's spiral track lay out in view.

The loco has been repainted since I last saw it about 7 years ago. There is much interest in restoring this fine engine back to running condition. 9 Oct 09. M2, 591 is in the running shed at Dematagoda. This is loco that was famously caught up in the Tsunami at Hikkaduwa. After it was repaired it was given this special paint scheme with waves on top of the blue band. The builders plate fixed to M7, No. 808. This is apparently the oldest surviving steam locomotive in Sri Lanka. A view of the fuelling point at the Hydraulic running shed at Dematagoda. W3, 669 at the hydraulic running shed at Dematagoda. A look inside the Hydraulic running shed at Dematagoda finds several Y class shunting loco's under repair. Indian Built M8, 844 is seen in the wheel lathe shed at Dematagoda. W2, 704 is currently out of service at Dematagoda. W1 loco's 632 & 634 look in a very sorry state around the back of the hydraulic shed at dematagoda. 11 Oct 09. As far as I know ,this is the last surviving narrow gauge diesel loco in Sri Lanka. P1 class No. 527. This loco can be found in the Viharamahadevi, (Victoria) park close to the center of Colombo. It has a running line all around the park but is sadly now out of use since it broken down some years ago and looks unlikley to be repaired. 11 Oct 09. A pair of WCG2 'screamers' are detached from the rear of a train after performing their usual banking duties. Catch them while you can as when the route is converted from dc to ac they will be redundant... 19/4/09. A typical scene in India as a family hitches a ride down the Bhore Ghats. 19/4/09.KZJ 18680 arrives at Lonavala with a service to Mumbai cst. 19/4/09. The bankers are required to assist the train up the 1 in 37 climb as far as Castle rock station. the loco at the leading end was 14032 GY. 19/11/06. Hubli pair 12064 & 12023 await the call of duty at Castle rock. Another twin set of Hubli beasts 12029 & 12030 await the signal to head east from Castle rock. 19/11/06. KJM 13267 at Castle rock. 19/11/06. Our train is held in the loop whilst decending the Braganza ghat to alow another goods train to pass headed by GY 14655. 14686 GY & 14551 GY. 19/11/06 Kalyan 14647 performing banking duties. 19/11/06 Another view of KYN 14647 at full cry on the rear. 19/11/06 Pune beast 18737 at Kulem about to depart after having two assisting loco's 14631 GY & 14632 GY detached. 19/11/06. 14054 from Erode shed stands at Madgaon with a train for Dadar. 19/11/06. 17946 ED piloting ERS jumbo 17805 dead inside at Madgaon station with an express southbound to Kerala. 19/11/06 a close up shot of the ERS jumbo 17805. 21/11/06 The classic tree framed shot of GY 14021 ready to depart Kulem with the 14:15 to Vasco Da Gama. This daily service requires two loco diagrams, both making one and a half round trips. Usual loco's are GY wdm 3a's and are change on a regular basis. This is a good service to cover for any basher as it often drops something special. These are the loco's that I saw in a two week period on this service,14035 GY,14021 GY,14032 GY, 14040 GY, 14043 GY 14038 GY & 18648 from Pune shed. 22/11/06. Erode 16805 at Madgaon with the daily service from Kerala to Verna. This service seems to produce a fresh loco every day and is a good turn to cover. I did this train regularly on the short run from either Madgaon or Majorda to Verna & back. The same loco should run round the stock at Verna and come straight back. 22/11/06. ED 16805 upon arrival at Verna station. 27/11/06. This is 17499 of KJM at Verna. 26/11/06.Pune 18648 stands at Majorda with the 14:15 from Kulem to Vasco. This loco was a rare treat on the local turn. 19/11/06. A busy moment at Madgaon with 17946 ED, 17805 ERS, & 18643 of Ratlam shed. The view from the bottom of the famous Dudhsagar waterfalls as a gooty triple set haul a goods train up the Braganza ghat. Three more loco's were banking on the rear. 26/11/06. 14017 GY aproaching Majorda heading for Kulem. 27/11/06. Erode 18484 arives at Verna and terminates after its long journey fron Kerala in the south of India. This loco usualy runs round the stock and heads south again, however; on this day the return working was taken over by 18209 ED. Note the unusual numbers made of chromed metal !! A closer look at the fancey embelishments. 22/10/2003. A rare picture of the skelital remains of crash victim 17506 on the Braganza ghat. During my visit the following year in 2004 the loco had been removed. 08/11/2004. Kazipet's 14587 on the Vasco to Kulem turns. 10/11/2004. KJM 13050 provides more variety on the mid day Kulem to Vasco service. 11/11/2004. Wdm 2 .17898 of pune shed putting in some spice on the locals to Kulem captured at cansaulim just down the road from my hotel. 13/11/2004. Yes, yours truly enjoying some local alco thrash !! 12/11/2004. 17898 seen storming away from Cansaulin towards Majorda with a Kulem local. 17/11/2004. 17936 of pune pilots Gooty's 14039 at Cansaulim on its way to Kulem. The variety of loco's on this service is amazing. 19/11/06. My lords ! I just had to get this one in the book. It's the senior engineer's track inspection trolly based at Kulem. It is powered by a small petrol engine via a belt to one of it's axels. I had one length of the platform, ok, low milage but absolute Hellfire !! 19/11/06. Even more variety of traction at a busy Kulem. 23/11/06. ERS 16459 at Madgaon with a south bound express. 15/11/06. 14124 of Erode shed passes over the level crossing on it's aproach to Majorda. 27/11/06. Another fine loco from the Erode stable 18209 at Verna. This engine worked my train back to Madgaon taking over from 18484 that had brought in the north bound service. 27/11/06. A nice pair ! 14622 & 14783 both belonging to Kazipet (KZJ) in the siddings at Verna.
